That's an excellent idea, if only those powers that be were so inclined.

Natural Gas would make a great alternative that could replace oil today, until renewable energy technology develops.
Good points.

Additionally, the promotion and expansion of the use of clean diesel technology would also help. Diesel engines are now much cleaner and much more efficient than gasoline engines. Our automotive industry should follow the examples set by Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen concerning the use of clean diesel technology. Yes, the initial cost is slightly more but over time, it more than pays for itself. Cleaner air and cheaper costs of ownership. A win-win for the American people.

It doesn't matter how slowly you pump it out, it's still not even a half of a year's supply for the U.S. A drop in the bucket.

If you count up all the estimated oil in the ground in Alaska right now. This is not counting what may be discovered in the future, there is about 10 years supply for the US. Some of this oil is not recoverable without better technology but it is still there. I wouldn't call that a drop in the bucket.

That doesn't count the oil in the ground in the rest of the US and offshore the continental US. It also doesn't count what Canada may be able to supply, this is just in Alaska and just known oil reserves. So we aren't running out any time soon.

That doesn't mean it might not be a good idea to develop other sources of energy, like hydro, nuclear, natural gas etc. We can also work on wind, tide, solar, and as technology improves these will hopefully be so efficient that they become the choice.

We also have oil and natural gas around Fairbanks, and over by Nenena there is supposed to be a lot of natural gas.

When you sell snake oil for a living, the availability of crude oil can have a negative impact your business.

Quite illustrative (but not surprising) that New England Liberals such as yourself are so flippant to dismiss the jobs and lively-hoods of hard working Americans and their families as "just a drop in the bucket."

Actually though, the only bucket around here is that big tub of Ben & Jerry's Propaganda you are spoon-feeding yourself from.

When the pipeline was orignally built it was hailed as having enough oil to take 20 years to pump out. Then everything was supposed to be removed and returned to its original state. But they found out there was much more than originally thought. They have also found out; as you pump oil out of wells.. more eventually seeps back in (from other sources)....
