No gas and no brakes on black ice...put the car in neutral and don't over-steer. I've never driven across any that I remember but I have driven on ice covered roads and I hope never to have to do that again. If you haven't already read up on cold weather driving. I know you are learning a lot and memorizing much...but it is not as carefree as driving in our home state.

I've never driven a 4x4 so maybe it is different...

If you have what Alaska requires, it will get you through Canada. When I crossed into Canada, they didn't even ask to see it. I did have to show the certificate to US customs before getting on the ferry at Prince Rupert.

I've driven on black ice in MA, PA & down here in NC. The worst experiences are the ones where you're in complete control but every other idiot out there on the road is determined to show you just what an azz they can be. Fortunately these folks tend to leave the road before they wind up crashing into you.

Megans, I'd call U.S. Customs and find out instead of the Canadian consulate. What gets them into Canada might not necessarily get them into Alaska. It would be a shame to get that far and have problems.

And hopefully up north in Alaska the drivers don't act like that.

No neutral with a 4x4, just foot off the gas and steer in the direction you want to go. Be aware that the direction of the road may not be the direction you want to go (i.e., it might be safer to drive off the road). 4x4s are less likely to slide, but don't get over confident. I'd guess that 3/4 of the 4x4s in the ditch got there because they thought they wouldn't slide or could stop quicker.

Do you have this link for snow/ice coverage? It used to be at NOAA but it changed this month.

I find reverse comes in handy when I need to swap ends on icy roads and for serious stopping!
