Does this mean you're now a resident? There are some great trails in the area.

A swimming pool would certainly be a nice addition.

No, close friends there and so a visitor. The Canada Games Center (Centre!) in Whitehorse is very nice. A bit far for a daily lap swim ha ha, but nice for the kids on the weekends.

OP was over five years ago? CaptKC...if you are still on this forum, would love to hear what you ended up doing and how it all turned out.

I think all options were pretty good....I always used to say a bad day in AK is better than any day down south.

if anyone else is finding this thread useful still,

Although Skagway is a sentimental favorite for me (worked a summer 17 years ago!)...it has more a Disneyland quality to it since they take in so many cruise ships at the same time during the season. Definitely more enjoyable when the "amusement park" closes and all the seasonal folks can actually enjoy where they're at. No-ship days are awesome.

I think the communities that are more diversified and have a larger year-round population are more appealing you have a chance of making longer friendships with year-round residents vs seasonal folks.

And being able to drive to Anchorage without making two border crossings is not a bad thing.

For future research, I have to agree that though Whitehorse is nice and an easy weekend destination for Skagwayians (other than the border crossing bureaucracy), Homer or even Haines is so much better for quality of life. My wife always says if we were to return to Alaska it would either be for Haines, Homer, or Sitka. I haven't lived in those towns like she has but have visited all three and have enjoyed all three.
