I think the high rent, heating fuel and food cost would make 60k a stretch. Economic studies of the Anchorage area have determined $45k is needed to be able to live, if you keep your housing costs in the 1/3 of your income range.

I was born and raised in Delta and am a bit miffed to see information given to you that isn't true, like about the vets and clinics.

As a contractor on Ft. Greely, you would have base privileges, including the commissary. It is a small one though. There are two clinics in town now, and I know the original one does do their own lab work, but I can't say I'd want them to manage my care....The clinic Akstafford says is on base is not on base, it is in the town and is merely mentioned on an information page to help the soldiers/contractors. It is very common to travel to Fairbanks to expand your shopping options and lower your prices. That said, the grocery store in Delta has been getting better as far as the food options available. For example, they have a new organic section.

A lot is going on in Ft. Greely and the area but it will probably be years if ever that the town will change enough to be a comfortable home for the average lower 48 family. People either love Delta, and never want to leave, or hate it. It's a beautiful, unique, austere place and I feel very strongly that people shouldn't move there unless they are attracted to the town and not the job. Fairbanks is the same way. It is an amazing place full of raw beauty, unique challenges and short but intense summers.

PS: the internet offerings are better than dial up but it's not as fast as the cities. People do play WOW there but it's slow.

I've never really understood the city conveniences thing. I'm really rather proud that we don't have a single fast food chain restaurant in Delta. After you've been here a week, you'll know where to get a good cup of coffee, a good burger, a good pizza, etc. All from locally owned businesses.

Commuting to/from Fairbanks once a week wouldn't be bad. Twice a week would be doable, three times would be getting really tough. Everybody has their own threshold I guess, but I tend to drive a lot. Just bear in mind that Fairbanks is NOT a normal city. It's pretty much an oversize version of Delta, except with a couple Starbucks...

Don't forget about the store that sells mostly cheap Chinese goods (Wal-mart) and a Home Depot in Fairbanks.

At least when we were in Fairbanks, it seemed to have some usual big box store type stuff to load up on. And we found a nice locally owned herbal/vitamin place too. I guess it helped that I have a friend that lives in Fairbanks that could direct us around accordingly.
