I arrived here excited to be spending my sixth summer in Alaska, but unfortunately my summer is coming to a sudden close. After a week of abdominal pain I visited the ER at Elmendorf and two CT scans show I have a mass in my kidney that needs immediate attention. I drove up from Georgia, but will be flying out tomorrow night. Friends in GA will fly up later and retrieve my truck.

As an Army retiree and vet with disability I can be seen in military and VA facilities. Here in Alaska the VA has an interesting partnership with the hospital at JBER. I was privileged to be the recipient of that outstanding care. My VA doctor, my military doctors and the other military staff were very competent, professional and caring. Nationally, the VA has been taking a hit for poor service and poor care. Locally, based on my experience that is not the case. I don't know your experience with the VA and I can't address that, but my experience has been great.

I'll continue following the interesting and sometimes lively discussions on the Alaska forum and hope to be back next summer!

Sorry your summer was cut short, JoDan, and glad you are receiving excellent care.

Best wishes!

I love me some Alaska. Get well soon and head back when you can. Make sure you head down to Seward when you get back. I spent a summer there a few years ago.

Best of luck to you. It's nice that the VA is set up the way it is here. If we need to we can send people right over from the clinic to the ER without much of a delay.

Seward is nice. That's where I work during the summer...Kenai Fjords National Park.

OMG - I am sorry your season ended soon. My families experience with the VA has been positive as well.

I wish you a speedy recovery and the ability to return to AK. We were delayed, but looking like we are leaving for our first trip up in the beginning of June. (I have to take a couple of trips as we are permanently moving).

I spent a summer down at Lowell Point. I got to fish in the creek early in the season for reds then for pinks and silvers later in the summer. There is nothing like spending a summer on the Kenai Peninsula.
