I haven't driven the AlCan, so I'll let other answer that question. We will get snow in October. You could send your guns from a Federal Firearms License in WA to one up here or if your girlfriend is traveling separately, she can check the fire arms. I've never taken them on the ferry, but I believe it's the same as flying where you can transport unloaded fire arms in a hard sided container.

Careful, someone transporting a firearm that isn't theirs is a Federal offense...

I couldn't even have my mother check and fly my guns up to me...

Part of the AlCan near the Yukon crossing north are (were) in terrible shape, the gravel road has large rifts and frost heaves through it especially on the northbound lane.

We also encountered the never ending hills and river crossings part, about 200 miles of up and down each time you get going downhill you come to a bridge at the bottom with a reduced speed limit which makes the uphills slow going. Very tedious when towing a trailer.
Make sure you take extra tires for your trailer, service stations are few and far between and can be quite expensive.

Thanks for those links!

Every FFL is different, but our local gun store charges $50 per firearm that she accepts for folks, so for us that might get pricey.

Hmm......it would appear that in all modes of transportation it is the ammunition that is killing us. The Marine Highway Haz Mat list says only up to 65#... Going to have to weigh the ammo cans.

When I checked in at Whittier I was asked if I had any firearms and ammo. I had several firearms, which I declared, and no ammo. The agent handed me a firearms tag and said it had to be taped to the inside of the windshield. It pretty much let everyone and their brother know there were firearms inside my Jeep. Sometime after I boarded the ferry the peice of tape they provided failed and the tag fell to the floor of my Jeep. When I checked in at Juneau I was again asked about firearms and ammo. Again I declared the guns. They never gave me anything to tape to the windshield.

On top of what the shipping dealer charges, the receiving dealer will also charge something..

A longshot but technically following the AMHS written policy to the letter. The policy states up to 65# ammo. It does not say per group or per person. Whether the two of you travel together or alone has no effect on the overall cost of the travel. So, have one person travel with the vehicle and book the stateroom. Have the other person book their ticket seperatly as a walk on passenger. When you book a cabin you are paying for the entire cabin and the AMHS could care less if you decide to share it with another passenger. The only downside is just like everything else different AMHS agents will interpet things differently. I would check in advance to see what their policy is regarding walk on passengers and ammo. And, unless you have different last names you probably should check to see if even though you are booked seperatly are they going to say the walk on passenger is not really a walk on passenger.

FYI...As you probably have already discovered, Canadian regulations regarding how much ammo you can bring into the country is about as clear as mud. It seems to range anywhere from 200 rounds up to 5000 rounds.

Well, that's a major bummer. Is it like TSA where they will do random searches of the vehicle/trailer? Or is it just all on the honor system?

LOL, good point, I was only talking about the receiving FFL, I'd hope my local store would help us out but I hadn't thought about anything but the shipping charge from the carrier.

We will be taking two vehicles with a trailer on each, so, that's a good point! I'd would certainly interpret that as 65# per vehicle.

Interesting about Canada. I've actually not spent any time researching that option because the hubs says no. (Since he's the only one of us who has ever traveled the AlCan, I defer to him there. Oh and he keeps saying something about an unpaid traffic ticket in Canada.....

As far as I know it is all on the honor system. They might want to inspect something you have declared. However, like I said, the tape they provided to stick it to the windshield must have been defective as it ended up on the floor of the Jeep somehow
