I had then toss the log and we got another flat the next day, so I cut another log so we can limp into the next town, then I had them toss that one too. but on the third flat, I kept the log and it was used for the next flat, where we limped into Destruction Bay and we were able to buy a wheel and tire there. We only had one more flat after that, then we were in Alaska and made it the rest of the way with no problems.....but yes, if I do it again I will get better tires...better yet, I won't do it in the winter.
I got a flat in the middle of nowhere in the Yukon the last time I drove to Alaska. Hit a chuck of wood on the road and bent the rim beyond repair. Drove on the tiny spare for 200km at 110km/h all the way to Whitehorse!

Thanks, you've given me an idea for a new thread for the Alaska forum.

Thanks.

You can buy a weather radio $20-$90, depending on if it covers other bands, like AM, FM, shortwave, VHF aircraft, longwave. There will be a variation in reception range. Some permit connection of an external antenna, some don't. Some are battery only or battery/AC. Other have solar power, and/or hand crank.

NOAA weather radio covers 95% of US including several dozen transmitters in Alaska. They have a couple dozen types of watches and warnings, current conditions & forecasts. If there is a new watch or warning, they sound a buzzer and a tone. Some of the weather radios can even be programmed for a single county. Environment Canada also has weather on 162.400-162.550.

I have the CCrane Skywave $90 radio that has weather, AM/FM, VHF aircraft, and shortwave. It fits in a pocket, uses 2 AAs. You may not need all that. Amazon has so many choices anyone might fear a mistake, but the reviews are pretty good. Lists of transmitter locations are online. Hope I've helped. Best wishes.
