I am currently seeking a fishing job. I live in Nelson, New Zealand. I have had 11yrs experience of deep sea trawling with qualifications.I have a young family and wife. I would like to earn decent money so I can set my family up in a house and secure our future as the money in fishing and quota in New Zealand has dropped. If anyone can help me out with some info I would appreciate it.

G'Day Bassy,

I am from Blenheim NZ, currently living in Australia, and am looking to head up to Alaska too with my young family. Not for fishing work I want to work as a bush pilot. What sort of visa do you need? Have you looked into it....?
Let us know how you get on.

Wow-

Where to begin with this . . . ?

With your trawling experience, you are more qualified than many who fish the Bering Sea on head&gut boats - sole, cod, etc.

However, if you wish to guarantee a living for your family, I highly suggest you stop here and now, and think about what your family means to you, and vice-versa.

Consider the risk of death. Then consider the risk of not making any money at all. Then consider the risk of getting hooked on fishing and never seeing your family in exchange for a few bucks and a risky job..

Probably, you are already hooked on fishing.

My advice: Don't gamble your family life to go trawling in Alaska.

Good luck!

Just thought I would mention -

I have dragged much of the Bering Sea and the northern Gulf of Alaska - I have not yet found anything there that I would trade for a good wife and children!

The money comes occasionally, but the family is the most important thing you have - do not sacrifice that for a false dream inspired by the Discovery Channel!!!!

For a safe way to get into the business, you might try Arctic Alaska

1 206 282-3445

or Trident (Don't have their #)

I suggest you look for another line of work, but . . .

.....the money, and the quotas here are not what they used to be either.

I'd suggest some more research if it's security you're looking for. Most of the commercial fishing here is under more and more pressure from declining stocks, privatization schemes, and competition from foreign trade.

Typically, boat owners and corporate interests are consolidating their positions, crewmen and support personnel are getting a smaller and smaller share here.

If I was to typify the industry here, I'd say that there's no lack of manpower, there's more people getting out of the business than are entering.

Most jobs available are going to be line jobs in processing plants or processing work on factory trawlers.

Neither of which are what I would call career track positions.

It's not impossible to come here and succeed, but do try to have realistic expectations going in.

Speaking of Australia and New Zealand, I know some people who lived here for a long time have pulled up stakes and moved there.

It would be interesting to find if 'immigrants' from the US are taking jobs and pushing out residents of New Zealand and Australia.
