Should not make a difference, but that's the law in Alaska. Probably this law was enacted long ago, and more than likely needs changing.

Agreed. Humans are notoriously short sighted. However, the original question seems so irrelevant/unimportant, and smoking is just so nasty. I just don't understand how anyone would want to start.
I remember when I was a kid and my parents would smoke in the car with the windows rolled up. UGGH! I don't think I would have ever started, no matter what.

Most kids start smoking, chewing, and the rest among their friends. Besides that, there is a pretty good chance that children of smoking parents who are bothered by the smoke... later in life will dislike anything relating to smoking.

The smoking age should be at least the same age as the drinking age in every state or province. After all, it's already been proven that smokers are more prone to get traffic tickets than non-smokers. This proves that nicotine adversely affects one's ability to drive.
