The newest boat in the Alaska Marine Highway system and they can't hire anyone smart enough to tie it up in Metlakata so it will remain at the friggen dock overnight....

Hope you all are taking the necessary precautions up there. They say that Volcano could go soon.

I had a day like that in 1985. I ran a patrol boat up on the beach in Oceanside, trying to make the turn into DelMar boat basin that connected to Camp Pendleton. I had a fully loaded out platoon of SEALs in the back of the boat and a full weapons load out of my own. The SEALs scaled the fence into Pendleton and disappeared. After they left, the news crews showed up at around 6:30 AM. The new commanding officer of my unit was on their heels (he'd assumed command about 2-3 weeks before). And then the day got bad.

There was a line in the '70's or '80's - "You know you're going to have a bad day when... 60 Minutes shows up on your doorstep."

Since I was the Petty-Officer-in-Charge, I was culpable. No question. It took an 6 month JAG Manual investigation before they came out with their final verdict - Driving too fast for conditions.

No kidding. I am REALLY not joking. Too fast for conditions. I was in idle forward. 500 RPM's on the engines. It's not like I was ruuing at 20-45 knots or something.

Live and learn. I always have a twinge of empathy for the skipper when I see pics like this.

Rance, I'm sorry to hear about your grandmother. It's never easy to lose a family member, no matter how long they lived. But I hope you have some great stories to tell Sweden & she'll live on through that.
