Relocating to SE Alaska. I would be interested in suggestions as to which islands or towns people would recommend and why. I am interested in temporary fishing jobs and other seasonal employment. I am also looking for land suitable for a moderate farming operation which is (apparently) difficult to find in the SE or purchasing/establishing a bed/breakfast operation. I am semi-retired already. Thanks!

I would look at Haines for a farming operation since it gets a bit more sun and a lot less rain than the typical SE community. It's quite small, however, so seasonal work opportunities would be limited. Haines and Skagway are the only communities on a road system. Everywhere else is land locked, serviced by ferry or airplane.
Sitka, Ketchikan, Petersburg, Wrangell and Juneau are the only communities with jet service.
You could contact a realtor in Juneau to the north or Ketchikan to the south for help in your search, as they are the biggest towns by far.

I love Sitka and Wrangell myself. Beautiful areas and not as touristy as Ketch and Juneau.

Farmer in the Dell is pretty hard to play in SE. Blind Cleric is right; you'll have better luck with that somewhere like Haines where constant rain doesn't leach every last drop of nutrients out of the soil.

There are no fishing jobs.

The B&B idea is the best you have. Buy an existing one in a place you like after visiting the area.

Buy a B&B and you can host all the other people wanting to move up there, like me.

A redneck hippie B&B where you can work or barter for your stay?

Worked jobs out of Sitka a couple of times. I liked it there very much.

Never got to Wrangell, much to my regret. I always wanted to take a boat up the Stikine into Canada.

Follow in the footsteps of the gold rush guys, going up the Stikine. I've always thought it would be cool to go the other direction and explore the Alexander Arch. around Sitka. Places like Yakobi Island.
