We are looking at a few places in the US to move to from California. As we were looking at Alaska, it seems that 70% of there housing has no connected utilities. Is this not required by law??? Also, when we called on a few places, they said "Oh, you are from the lower 48? The place is no longer available!" I know that is against Federal Law. What is with that anyway? I read that most people in AK are from the "lower 48" anyways? Thanks.

Landlords have every right to request local references and require that prospective tenants have local employment (or otherwise have the means to pay the rent). Getting stuck with -48ers in your property who came up on spec, can't find work, can't pay the rent, have a passel of hungry children to feed, and can't afford to leave is a time consuming and expensive mess I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.

Just in case you were wondering, decent landlords don't rent to people they know can't afford the rent, and they have every legal right to refuse.

No wonder landlords aren't lining up to rent to you. I wouldn't. It would be cheaper to leave a place empty than to rent it to someone whose income doesn't come close to covering the rent. I wouldn't want to worry about a tenant's hungry children, either. Alaska is expensive. If you're thinking of coming up for "the check," I'd advise you to think again.

Helga's just another troll. He/she has a pile of money in one thread, hungry children in another, and I won't dirty this forum with its commentary in a thread concerning extreme cruelty to animals.

Good luck in Spokane.

And you moving up here then spouting off that we are not like Cali is not going to cut it. No, it's not required by law. We do our own thing up here and it is nothing like the world you know. So yea, move to Oklahoma or Mississippi or somewhere they are used to being nannied.

I can see my witty humor is not needed on this thread. I think that Met, Riceme, and 1stimestar have it covered...

If you do make it up here, please leave the California way back in California...

And I can see you being refused a place to rent if you don't have a job up here or other sorts of income coming in.
