Hi everyone,
My husband and I have always wanted to travel to Alaska and are finally going to take a cruise there this summer. We would really like to avoid the big crowds at the "tourist popular" pubs and enjoy a brew or two at a local establishment if possible. Does anyone have any suggestions on places to do that? Our stops are Skagway, Juneau and Ketchican. We are still trying to decide on what to during our stop in Ketchican as well if anyone has any recoomendations. We would really appreciate your advice.
Thanks!

All of the ports mentioned above are small ports and have an intimate small town feeling. During the summer months, expect large crowds, as this is the peak season for travel to beautiful Alaska. You may want to research the different shore excursions offered to you by your cruise line. These excursions offer a break from the crowds and interesting and unique adventures.
Ketchikan is the salmon capital of the world. The canneries are busy and the stream below Creek Street's rustic boardwalk bustles with life. Visit the ancient grove of Totem Bight, the largest collection of authentic totem poles anywhere. Make a flight to nearby Misty Fjords--a breathtaking vista of Alaska's unspoiled wilderness and America's newest national monument; or try a little salmon fishing.
Most definitely so, it seems. Just let me know when and where. I just became the new head of the family salmon processing business...so much for rotation jobs. I can be in Ketchikan to meet up with you pretty much whenever.
BTW John I've been pricing some of the cruise tours available on my trip & to say that they're spendy is being kind. Milepost has links to most of the tour providers websites. For example I could rent a boat from one provider for $400 for 6 hours. That same boat through the cruise line is $1600/pp! That's nearly what I'm paying for the damn cruise!!!
Yeah, that's because the cruise lines will rip you off any chance they get. They won't even recommend excursions unless the tour company gives them a kickback.

Yup... The same is true for recommended stores. Diamonds International for example...
By the way, Barkely, you're buying the hootch in Ketchikan.
