What's up w/Montana? That's another state I thought of moving to. Bad experiences there?
My nephew has lived in Missoula for a long time and really likes it there. I'm in a different part of the state and the wind blows all the time and there seems to be quite an unsavory abundance of meth. I don't know what the attitude is towards average people moving here; the people do seem pretty nice but I'm just here for a little while. And I think being from Alaska rather than Cali helps.

I know that in some parts of Montana there is a lot of animosity towards wealthy Californians who move in and drive up the property values et al, but I don't see any danger of that happening in this particular part

That's interesting, I've read the stuff on the forum for MT & everyone always mentions people from California moving there. Weird, it's like the only people who move there are from California. Surely, there are others from different states

Several years ago--not sure how many--a lot of the Hollywood types "discovered" Montana--so yeah, there's a lot of truth in the Cali thing. I think that there's resentment about it becoming a playground of sorts for rich people, and from what I can see that does seem to be coming from California. I haven't seen the parts of the state where the infestation is bad though..someone said that the Bozeman area has it the worst though. I'm just here for a short time though and not any sort of expert on it at all. Toad seems to be afraid they are going to all flock to ND and then infest Alaska, so he'd better get his winter wheat crop in before that takes place.

If you get on those forums, you'll find alot of Cali developers are eating up the land in MT, UT, et and building crap, bringing in crap, and that contributes to the attitude.

Well technically aren't OR & WA bedroom communities for CA?

Not at all! Oregon and [Western] Washington have a very laid back feel that isn't at all like go-go-go-all-the-time Cali...

I spent two weeks in Florence & Bend with a side drive up to Mt. St. Helens. Everywhere we went people were very unhappy with Californians driving up the price of real estate.

That's because you were in Florence and Bend. Both of them have especially bad infestations. But there really are plenty of parts of Oregon that they haven't ferreted out yet.

I love Lincoln City. Some parts of Newport are okay, but it's becoming a bit too urban-sprawl for my tastes. There are a lot of cute rental places in Lincoln Beach, too.
Can't go in the summer, though, too many people. I like to go in the fall or winter- excellent storm weather!
