It really depends on where she's moving to. Regardless, she'll almost certainly find herself needing some sort of outdoor clothing that she doesn't currently have, so maybe something like a gift card from REI or Eddie Baur or another of the online/catalog shops might fit just right.

Life in Alaska is often tough
Occasionally you get screwed over by politicians
Checks come in the mail but it's really "hush" money
Keeping warm can be a *****

However people say it's worth it, and I tend to agree
Even when the air itself begins to freeze
Alcohol that's blueberry-flavored keeps you toasty
Though I've been told it's quite pricey I think it's your best bet with the current cost of electricity
Enough silly rhymes about Alaska cause I think you'll see
Read this poem again and find the hidden gift suggestion!
Impressive!!!

Two vital supplies a girl will need in AK--a large (at least 4oz.) can of pepper spray (for protection from both bear and man) and a collapsible shovel that fits under the seat of your car (you'll be surprised how often you'll need it!).

A few items you wouldn't realize a girl would need way up north--lots and lots of lotion!!! It is REALLY dry in AK, both summer and winter, and the store brands just don't seem to cut it. I used Corn Huskers Lotion, but the aroma is a bit masculine. Get her some large quantities of unique, but effective, sweet smelling lotions. Believe me, she'll be appreciative!

Another thing that's often overlooked is a large sized "travel" blanket to keep in her car at all times. Like the shovel, you'll be surprised just how often you will use it. I have the kind that folds up into its own bag and has a strap for carrying.

Hope this helps. I've lived in AK most my life and these are some of the neccessities (for a girl, at least).

How about a small multi-purpose pocket tool, like a Leatherman or a Swiss Army knife?

Thanks for the tip! I never realized that the air was that dry.

I'm thinking there are all kinds of things in the L L Beans catalog that would be helpful. Instead of a blanket in the car how about a sleeping bag, they make them that will tolerate even the coldest of temperatures.

I decided to go with the collapsible shovel. Though I must say I find the idea of bear mace pretty funny. Living down south I just never considered the necessity of such a thing.
