If she's from a primarily urban area and background, a truely thoughtful gift would be a course of instruction in firearms use and safety. Even if she doesn't intend to own or use one herself, firearms are virtually ubiquitious up here and at least a basic familiarization would be helpful. Depending on how much and what types of outdoor activities she intends to pursue up here, a working knowledge of what NOT to do around guns might prove to be an essential safety consideration both for her and the people around her.

I'll avoid the usual soapbox diatribe and just say that no matter what your personal views on the subject, this is definately a case where ignorance is NOT bliss.

definitely get her the milepost if she doesnt already have it. even if she doesnt drive up here its the best way to find out all the great things to see and do in AK.
