Since this is my first post here I'd like to say HI to everyone and thanks in advance for any help given. For days I've been looking all over the internet for a site like this. I'm so glad I found you guys.
My husband just recieved orders that he's being sent to Ft Richardson and this will actually be our first move. He decided that after years out of the ARMY that he wanted to reenlist. He's been gone since June and is finally finishing up at Ft Lee this week. We are from Indiana and like I said this is our first move. I know it gets cold there, and being about 40 miles east of Chicago I am use to cold winters (and miserable hot, HUMID summers ) but I was wondering if anyone can give me some advise on clothing for the winters in AK? Not really sure what all we will need.
We plan to apply for on-post housing but I understand the waiting list is extremely long for this. We have to have at least a 4 bedroom with a basement. The BAH and COLA are really good for there, plus I'm a nurse and plan on working full time, so I know we can afford to live off post. I'm just wondering which one is better? I've heard that Eagle River is extremely nice, and has good schools, but I would greatly appreciate it if someone could tell me other areas that are nice and which ones we should stay away from. If anyone has links to houses for rent I could sure use them. We are trying to not go more then $2200.00/month but Im not finding much for that price, especially since we need at least 4 bedrooms. Is this normal or am I just not looking in the right places?
Again, thanks in advance for any help given. I really do appreciate it.

Hello there! I don't know anything about the questions you were asking, just wanted to say "hey" to another Hoosier. (whatever that means) What town are you from? I am from Elkhart and love it here in Bethel.

I live in Michigan City. I went to nursing school in South Bend so I'm familiar with Elkhart. Nice to meet you

Don't worry about it. Anchorage is not that cold. You will be able to find what you need here and you won't freeze to death before you do.

Also, when you arrive, you can look at rentals. Eagle River is a pretty small area so check it out but look at Anchorage as well.

Of course, there are lots of good deals out in the "valley' but you will have to commute.

sonshine,

Take a look at this recent thread under the "Anchorage" section of our board. Some good info along the same lines.

The "Valley" is the "MatSu" valley area that Sara Palin is from "Wasilla". This is where the Knik, Matanuska and Susitna Rivers dump into the Knik Arm. It is basically "North" of Anchoarge.

It is in the Matanuska Borough (County) and about a forty+ mile drive from Anchorage for commuting, the cost of land/houses is cheaper, but the drive is about an hour each way, and a pain...

Nurses start out at about $28.00 an hour and up for a RN.

You will have no problems in getting a job in either Anchorage or the Valley.

Good luck!
