Since I will be relocating to Barrow this summer, I assume I will need to purchase a gun or two. What would you recommend? Also, if I purchase guns here, how do I go about legally getting them to Barrow?
Thanks everyone for all of your help. Once I get there we will all have to sit down and have dinner and coffee together. I can not wait to meet all of you.

Well, maybe you should hold off on that. It will take a year before you can get a resident hunting license, and in the mean time you can figrue out what you need.
There's basically four kinds of guns that are useful here. Shotguns for waterfoul. Big bore cannons for protection agains polar bears. Long range weapons for caribou, and small caliber weapons for seals. Of course most people here combine all of that into one rifle and one shotgun most of the time. But they get a lot of practice too, and shooting polar bears with a seal gun is something they can safely do.
Incidentally, there is an excellent gunsmith in town.

So, it isn't that important to have a gun before we arrive for safety. Neither my husband or I are hunters. We just thought we would need one for protection.

And yes, I do want to meet everyone.
The chances that you will have an accident and shoot yourself are infinitely higher than the chance you will ever want to use a gun here in self defense against anything except a polar bear.
That is what I was concerned about......protecting myself from a hungry polar bear. So, a polar bear probably won't eat me until I am there at least a year?

I wonder if they have insurance for that??? One year or your money back

novices....count shots you fire and keep last one to shoot yourself with before bear gets you!!!
Seriously...there is a lot more to handling, caring for and firing a gun. A large capacity gun will take you a long time to handle correctly and many many rounds of ammo target practicing. Many months of target practice. If you do buy weapons...be sure it is a large enough capacity to stop a bear and sign up for a gun course asap!!
