Still, everything has to be brought to Alaska, except for some local lumber, produce, etc. It means that every product sold at stores, dealers, etc. in Alaska is more expensive than the same product sold in the lower-48.

There is a little local lumber around Fairbanks, and some produce that people grow during the summer. These include potatoes from a few small farms, and some other seasonal produce, including hay. Other than that, and perhaps a few more things, all products are shipped up here. The prices are lower in the largest towns, of course, and extremely high in the bush.

If you live within driving distance of a Native smoke shop, you can kill yourself for quite a bit less money that most if not all of the lower 48.

Other than that, I shop online for most of my personal needs. When I'm here, I spend a lot less money on food than when in the lower 48. No property tax where I'm at; gas is not too terrible, 3.18 or some such. I cannot for the life of me understand why anyone at all drinks soda. Beer is expensive but wth, no one has much time to drink much of it when the salmon are in anyway.

Rumor has it that snow is cheaper here than elsewhere....

Seriously though, yeah: stuff costs more here. That's the way it is, since we have to freight everything in by plane or barge. That is somewhat offset by generally higher wages...
