Okay, I haven't read this whole thread yet but this is too funny. *E*V*E*R*Y*O*N*E* has an accent. Alaskans do not all have the SAME accent. For instance, I can 'hear' a southern accent but I do not 'hear' a northern accent. I do not hear an accent in my own voice at all and have sometimes been asked what my accent is (which baffles me, I can only guess there must be something wrong with my hearing).

I thought the OP question was pretty funny, too, so I'm going to continue reading replies. (I don't mean to imply that I am laughing *at* the op.)

As for a Native accent, those who have an Alaska Native language as their first language have a definite accent (well, probably SEVERAL definite accents). I hear in the very familiar rural native accent more of a very clear and tight pronunciation of words, along with a tendency to put emphasis on certain parts of a sentence, as something different than an actual accent. It is a distinctive way of speaking, and the difference is not entirely just from the rural areas, either.

We have a lot of Filipino as well as Spanish-speaking people here, people from Norway, but that is just to name some of our more significant numbers of different ethnic origins.

If there is an "Alaskan accent" I guess I would be incapable of discerning it....

The First Lady of Alaska has given the world an inside look at just what the Alaskan accent is like:

Holy Wah

Eh. Okay

Yah sure-hey

Youbetcha

Pre'neer

Kotisva -- Go this way
Kotatva -- Go that way

Yah, hey it's raining outside yah, where are my swampers, eh.
