Mt. McKinley VS Denali * This just bugs me! (Wasilla: transplants, vacation)

I thought that it had been pretty much officially recognized as Denali as of a few years ago and the government had done away with McKinley. Considering McKinley himself didn't even name the mountain after himself, it makes even less sense.

The State of Alaska officially changed the name of the mountain to Denali some time in the 80's, I think. But the federal government has refused to recognize that (all the more reason to refer to it as "Denali"). The feds have recognized the change of the name of the park itself from Mt. McKinley National Park to Denali National Park.

We say DENALI!!! I get so frustrated when people say McKinley, it is in no way associated with the state of Alaska. The mountain was named Denali way before any of us were here. It's the Athabaskan name for that mountain, they were here long before we came barging in!!!!! I am just a white girl that moved here from the lower 48 and I still know that. If you google Denali, you mostly get the national park, and then a bunch of things that say McKinley. It all started with finding out the story of why the maps say McKinley, ever since I have some kind of a pet peeve about it.

I am not Native Alaskan, but like some Native Alaskans, it does not bother me a bit what name it's called. I am already used to Denali Park, all around the mountain. What is so romantic about Denali, (the great one)? By the way there is another Denali, made in the USA by GMC

We could always call it the Denali McKinley (the great McKinley).

Locals mostly just call it "the Mountain". But I've heard both Mt.McKinley and Denali used; we all know what it means.

Ditto that.. we just call it the mountain although Denali in Athabaskan means "High One". Just an interesting tidbit..

When we were there, most of the time people said "He", as in "He came out this morning." or "He came through the clouds this afternoon" or "The wind is shifting, he may come out this afternoon."
