President McKinley never stepped foot in Alaska, renaming Denali was a political ploy when he was running for office. I don't know why it bugs me but it does!

Alaskans, what do you call it?

Now, a bit about the biggest mountain, I found a website with better verbiage than my attempt at an explanation.

Mount McKinley has a larger bulk and rise than Mount Everest, although the summit of Everest is higher measured from sea level 29,028 feet (8,800 m). Everest's base sits on the Tibetan Plateau at about 17,000 feet (5,200 m), giving it a real vertical rise of a little more than 12,000 feet (3,700 m). The base of Mount McKinley is roughly a 2,000-foot (610 meter) elevation, giving it an actual rise of 18,000 feet (5,500 m).

Pretty cool huh?

Renaming it? Denali is the Athabaskan word for it; perhaps it was never "ours" to rename.

Locals mostly just call it "the Mountain". But I've heard both Mt.McKinley and Denali used; we all know what it means.

That is my point. We do all know what it means but I wish it was "officially" Denali.

Oh, I see what you mean now. I am running on sleep deprivation and not so good coffee...yeah those federal government idjits won't recognize "Denali" but who the hell cares about them anyway.

Denali, the summit of North America. The seven summits, the highest peaks of the 7 continents! Trips, Statistics & information!

I've always called the mountain "McKinley" and the park "Denali". I guess I just don't get as worked up about the name, though most of the time I just say "the mountain is out today" anyway.

I wouldn't get worked up over it. Either way is fine, everyone knows what both names refer to. Denali is technically a more correct name but the McKinley bit is a part of the history now (recent relatively speaking and rather absurd circumstances but history nonetheless).

I call it Denali, or 'it's out."

I don't think I'd lose sleep over it being named what it's named now. Too many important things in life to worry about than a name.

I'm not native but I find it insulting that it's been officially re-named McKinley. It has no business being named after a white man in the first place, especially one not from Alaska. The native name Denali has a much more descriptive and romantic sound to it. It's always been Denali for me and that's what it'll stay.

Let's not forget the whole history of USA is only couple of hundred years long... and only now the native's voices are being heard. So long as First Nations or Tribes do get money from gambling or natural treasures, they will grow stronger and have more say and recognition. Too bad this is the way, but better late than never.
