Hi. my son has a new job in Alaska and will need to ferry his vehicle to either Skagway or Haines and drive to Anchorage. Which is the best route considering road conditions and October weather. A longer drive or scenery doesn't matter. Best road and safest route preferred. Thanks.

Or why not just use the alaska marine ferry system and go direct into Seward and North? October is pushing the limits on the open water last leg ferry option though. Need to check there schedule to c if it is still running that late

If it comes down to Skagway or Haines I would go with Haines. Come Oct you will see winter weather. There is more traffic out of Haines and the road will be better maintained.

In October, there is lots of snow in the passes starting to build out of the SE Ferry ports, the drive on the AlCan will be quicker and less snow than the Coastal passes. Just have good snow tires and a sound vechicle... It is a long walk from any of the points if your car is broke...
