In my county in WA, there is an online interactive maps database which helps people research potential land purchases to check for flood plains, hydric soils, etc. While I could find nothing similar available in the state of Alaska, I did find through the USDA's website, a tool called the "Web Soil Survey". It allows one to focus on areas up to 10,000 acres, and provides detailed information as to soil types, slopes, etc. While nothing can substitute for actually getting out and looking at parcels, this tool assists in ruling out certain parcels from the get go. It is located at:

Web Soil Survey - Home

Perhaps this can help others who are interested in the characteristics of certain land parcels which are listed for sale. Fortunately for me, the areas I am interested in are free of permafrost, and look encouraging as far as the soils are concerned.
