4 wheel drive Jeep (open diffs), with 34" AT tires......still cant get up steep slope with 'packed' snow....spinning out.

Wondering if chains would help? Are they a PITTB to put on, take off?

Thoughts?

thanks!

They would probably help. A pain to put on? The first few times yeah. But with practice and putting them on before your stuck helps. I carry a set for my minivan...but have never had to use them.
My 94 Dodge is like a log skidder and I have yet to find conditions that call for them.

Try get a set of studded tires for your Jeep or some good all season tires. BF Goodrich makes a set of tires that have a soft compound called Moab, I wonder if anyone has tried these tires in Alaska?

I have never seen anyone use them and frankly I wish they would ban studded tires, the ruts the studded tires leave in the roads are more dangerous than the ice, you can get sipped tires or all weather and be just fine without studs. The only time you would need chains or studs for that matter is if you are living in outlying areas like WAY out in the valley like 20-30 miles outside of palmer or wasilla opposite anchorage and we just had a nasty snow storm and even then its only a maybe I can get around in my truck just fine.

It's probably the poor road building and over weight semi's that cause more ruts than studded tires. And besides...doesn't Anchorage have a law for aluminum studs vs steel?

Don't know if you are in Alaska, but if you are a good set of snow tires with studs will make an amazing difference. I have chains but never use them.

I have a set of cooper discoverers with studs on my beater Toyota and it feels like I can go almost anywhere.

If you have a VERY steep hill to climb then get some ice chains. You can get pretty good at putting them on and off. Ice chains have pointed cleats that dig in and you will be able to climb almost anything with a jeep

We used them, for pulling the car out of the ditch, (after trucker-hubby backed in there and having to cut down a tree) due to the ice slick after a melt in the yard to get some traction in a short area.... We have some that fit the car, and I could probably get them on if I had to, but it would take a bit, that is only after I find them...but was told we had them...and you want to be on flat ground when you have to chain up....

I've never seen anyone use chains in Alaska, but I used them in Oregon-I'm not a tire chain putting on kind of girl (unless I had to) so I had Les Schwab put them on. It was a pain in the tail because you have to drive slow and some parts of the road there were clear so driving was very noisy!

Probably have but did locking the diff help at all? If you are sliding sometimes cables on a smaller tire might actually work better. The newer compound tires might also be an idea Michelin x ice comes to mind though on a Jeep?

Steep hills can be tough..........and dangerous.
