I know it's been said over and over in the thread, but Just wanted to throw in my 2 cents: I have an 06 Subaru Impreza.... wouldn't trade it for ANYTHING.... Any of the Subaru AWD Vehicles are going to be good... promise... it isn't just a fad... they really REALLY do the job up here promise.

Good grief!! Why in the world would you buy a little wussy car? Buy a real Alaskan car like a Subaru Forester with a turbo. Or at least a rusted out Jeep Cherokee.

Is it true what I heard - that you have to replace the Prius battery after 10 years for $10k??? (though hopefully in 10 years the cost will be lower). I think the idea of a self-generating battery is fantastic - but that cost is reallllllly hard to swallow. Is battery life (of the Prius sort) affected in a severe climate like AK?

I like my "crappy" '98 Ford Escort which gets nearly 40 mpg on the highway....never would have considered "cash for clunk-ering" that sucker. Still would love a pick up truck though. Overseas we always used Toyota Hilux - don't know what the US equivalent is ... those are damn hardy trucks. Even better a Landcruiser flatbed...we had one that was doused in petrol and then had an RPG shot into it and STILL ran! Now that's a truck.

Okay, I've read all the posts here... I drive a GMC 4x4 but my wife needs a car for the commute from the valley to Anchorage. We wanted to get a Honda civic because it gets such good gas milage (36 hwy). What kinda gas milage are those Subarus getting?

According to the Subaru website the Forester gets 27 MPG on the highway, 20 in town. Look at their website, it gives you the estimated MPG for all their vehicles.

I bought a new Forester this year. It has a manual transmission, since I don't like automatic ones, and it does around 30+MPG on the highway, or 22-24MPG driving in the city. Combined driving is around 25MPG right now (winter), and 26.2 (combined) during the summer.

The new non-turbo (fuel injected) motor has plenty of power for city or highway driving, but it uses more fuel than older motors. However, it does an excellent job passing other cars on the road, specially on 5th gear past 60MPH. A little tough on the gas pedal, and it responds with aplomb. It has a lot of room inside, too.

The same car with an automatic transmission should use more fuel than the manual one, however.
