Hello All~~

I live in NYC; my elderly parents live in Galway, in Saratoga County, on route 147 aka Sacandaga Road, north of route 67, south of route 29.

Currently they have only Verizon for telephone service. They don't have cable TV.

DH would like to get Mom an IPad, and of course we would like for her to be able to go online with it. Verizon doesn't provide DSL in her area. Who does?

You may think to yourselves: why don't they ask one of their neighbors, but unfortunately they very much keep to themselves--they are cripplingly shy--and they do not know any of their neighbors!

I am guessing people rely on satellite for their dish tv and internet.

Can anyone throw any light on this? Are there some local carriers I should be Googling? Verizon and ATT do not offer DSL there, this much I know.

Thank you very much for any help you can offer.

Lana

If cable were available in their area, it would be Time Warner. If you provide Time Warner with their address, they would be able to tell you if it is available to them. I would think that if they are right on 147 they should be able to get cable.

Default VerizonL terrible service and non existent customer service

We are out in Quaker Springs area and although we have Verizon DSL and landline, the service is terrible. We have had Verizon check our lines three times and they "repaired" the problem....BS...phone cuts off in middle of conversation constantly. After the 3rd time, they told us it was our phones, mind you we had all inside wiring checked and purchased new phones. We do have Direct TV with which we are extremely satisifed.

Verizon told the people a mile away they wouldn't provide service i.e. run the lines for DSL unless they each paid $20K. I would stay away from Verizon even if they provided service.

So would Direct TV, which I assume is a dish tv service, also provide internet I wonder?

Anyone else?

Thanks~~

Direct TV is satellite. If you have wireless computer or device (smartphone, a wireless card) to plug into computer that might work. We use card (Verison) when traveling in RV. The smart phone (Verizon) can be used as a router, which you would plug into computer. The wireless card has an initial cost and then there is a monthly charge. The smart phone cost is your monthly cost for the phone.
