Hi,
I'm just wondering what the job situation is up in that area? Is it hard to get hired? My boyfriend and I moved to Providence this past summer and I can not get hired anywhere. We have been looking at the upstate NY area, but want to make sure there is a decent job market up there. Thanks for your help!
As Piperspal said "it depends on what line of work you are in".
I lived in East Greenbush in the early 90's and never had a problem getting a job (just out of school) but since moving here from Northern NJ in June, the job market is on "standby".
We purchased out first home in June (outside of Catskill) and cut our expenses by 1/2 by moving. My wife make the trip to Manhattan for work but she enjoys the train ride.
Good luck - Hopefully things pick up in 2009.
lilime, Kat1994 is right about Athens! Part of the remake "War of the Worlds" was filmed in Athens. That area around Route 9W is in controversy right now over desired commercial development. Both sides have their points, but IMO, I think that region could use an economic shot in the arm. That might work in your favor with regards to the job market. I will have to search the forums - wonder if anyone posted a thread on possible casino development? That too, is very controversial right now - it would be interesting to read some differing views. OK, back to your regularly scheduled topic!
Thanks for all the feedback! We would be looking for pretty much any type of work- delivery, retail, grocery, restaurant/cafe, office, parks and recreation are all jobs we have experience in....we will work anywhere that will hire us.
Athens sounds interesting, too, I will have to look more into it.
Lilime, look into a company called Empire Merchants North. They are a very large liquor distributor that is bulding a larger headquarters (after a recent merger) in the Coxsackie area. (Love that Greene County! aaahhh...)
My husband & I were in the restaurant & tavern business for many years & got to know the distributors well. It can be good money; real good money. We knew guys that paid mortgages & put kids thru college on a liquor sales salary. We knew guys that started out in shipping or delivery & did nice jumps into better positions.
Sadly or not, during a great economy people celebrate with booze. During a crappy economy, they commiserate with booze. There will always be jobs in this industry and more niche fields will probably open up in marketing & ad. to address responsible drinking. Lotta money is going to be spent on that, just watch.
I believe EMN is slated to open in early 2009 - definitely worth checking out.

I found the company you were talking about. I hope it is ok to post their parent company website, as it has the jobs available at this link>
