Anyone live in the East Mountains area (e.g Tijeras) and have horses? If so, do you know of any neighborhoods that have a community arena and/or direct access to trails? A local riding club?

What can you tell me about keeping a horse in this area? Specific husbandry needs, cost of hay, ease of finding horsey friends?

Any neighborhoods you want to suggest?

How is it getting around there in the winter-time?

Anything you can tell me would be appreciated!

I can't speak for Tijeras, but I am knowledgeable about horselife in Edgewood, Stanley and Moriarty :0)

Default re: horses in east mountains

Please do tell about the areas you are familiar with.

Many of the homes I am seeing are on 2 acres. Ordinarily I would think that too small for horses (I would have 2 or 3). But it looks like pastures end up as dry lots and hay has to be supplied for forage anyway? And I would imagine that psyllium is a good idea?

And how are the winters? Does the snow stay on the ground long? Is the soil a mucky clay?

Thanks!

I know nothing about horses except they have four legs and can run faster than me. I did ride as a kid though.

However I have met RRR and can say with conviction that she knows a lot about horses and the area, especially after all the driving around she did looking for a place. Probably the best person to get advice from on here on the subject.
