Does anyone here have knowledge or experience in the ABQ film scene? I'd really love to move to ABQ in a few weeks from Minnesota and I'd love any wisdom people have to offer regarding getting my foot in the production door.
Is there consistent work available in production? Do I need a day job? I'm single and willing to live cheaply with roommates, and I've got around $2,500 cushion if I need to intern or work for free for awhile. I just want to make sure there's enough film work happening and that I could get on board. Are most crew workers hired locally, or brought in from L.A.?
I'm interested in camera work and lighting. I have a Bachelor's degree in film and I've worked on a handful of short student films. I've done a bit of freelance work. I own all my own camera, lighting, audio gear, etc. to get professional results, but I want to work on high budget, professional productions. I want a day job in the industry and I want to learn from and network with professionals. I don't think I can afford L.A. at this time and I'm not sure I'd want to even go there if I can avoid it.
What I know is that, for the time being, Gov. Martinez is still on board with the tax incentives program. So far in 2013, spending is up despite a little dip last year. I see there is ABQ Studios, I-25 Studios, and some tiny studio in Nob Hill. I know that as soon as tax incentives go away, so will the professional productions, but for now it's seems okay.
