I'm happy to report that Hatch chiles are now being carried at most major grocery stores in the San Diego area --where I recently moved-- from mid August thru the end of September, ranging from $.99 - $1.49 per pound. I bought 30 pounds a few weeks ago. Roasted them, peeled them, and put them in the freezer. Now, if I could only see the Sandias from my kitchen window . . . .

I wish this were true where I now live, in VA! Last year, Fresh Market said they were roasting Hatch green chiles, and we arrived in desperate anticipation only to find that they were doing it somewhere in the kitchen in the back, and selling teeny plastic containers on ice in the produce section (like the kind you'd get cut-up fruit in). I tried to reason with them, to make them see that this was wrong, wrong, wrong, to no avail.
So, I get mine shipped in jars, for now. I'm hoping green chile will be like siracha, and sweep the country soon. That would be awesome.

Sadly they just don't understand Chiles in the south Very few people here (NC) seem to like life on the spicey side. While not like fresh roasted Gilley Loco in Abq. will ship their Salsa, Chile Verde, other items. Great people and products, I've become a devoted customer.
Thanks Poncho. Since I posted I have found some Hatch products at our fairly new Trader Joe's. BUT.......it sure doesn't have the same appeal as buying fresh roasted Chiles. Fall in NM is a special time when the smell of roasting Chiles is in the air!
Hope you all know how lucky you are to live in NM.
Several grocery chain stores in San Diego carry Hatch chiles during chile season. One of them --Northgate-- even roasts them for customers at $10 per 40-lb. bag.

Whole Foods started doing a nationwide Hatch chile promotion. Hopefully they can continue doing that.
I ship from there to friends who have moved away from NM. I also go directly to their Hatch location (I live in Las Cruces) when chile is out of season or when relatives visit and want to take some back east.
