I will be closing on a house in Placitas in several weeks. The range and the water heater are propane. Im thinking about converting to all electric. The only source of heat is a mini-split system. I’m afraid that there could be a power outage or a scheduled PNM maintenance outage. For those of you who live or have lived in Placitas and who are all electric, thoughts? Are outages frequent? What do you do? I really hate propane and would like to get rid of it but I don’t want to remove it and then need it for a backup heating system. I’ve never had propane before so it’s all new to me. Thanks!

It sounds like you're close to the village. We're about 2 miles east of I25. We have occasional short term outages, and most seem to be just long enough to require all the clocks to be reset and the computer to reboot.

We have natural gas, not propane, for heat, water heating and a stove top. I'm not sure how far the gas lines run away from I25. There is nothing inherently bad about propane. We've had a couple of houses that used it. It functions the same as natural gas, just stored in a tank. I haven't priced propane locally, so I don't know current costs. Just be aware that electric heat and water heating can be very expensive, so you might want to check the operating costs of those.

Gas was considerably cheaper than propane when I switched to it about 10 years ago. Ended up saving about one-third on the utility bill. Like jiminnm, I lived within 2 miles of I-25, so active gas lines were available to connect to. IMHO, it's worth considering.

Convert to nat gas or all electric if you can. Propane services can suck and cost is very prohibitive compared to the other two.
