Where have you lived before?
There are safer and less safe areas. Low-income neighborhoods will be less safe and have poor schools. Similar to other cities.
It's been a few years since we lived in Albuquerque, but I think the advice we got is probably still fairly good. For schools we were told to look at feeder schools to La Cueva, East, and Sandia High Schools. We ended up living about 1/2 mile from Sandia High and our son did well there (walking to/from fulltime his first two years of school). We could walk the neighborhood, to the parks, and even out to businesses on Wyoming and Montgomery. It was a nice neighborhood and we enjoyed living in the area.
Rio Rancho was the other area recommended. We almost bought in the area, but when visiting the high school we didn't like the atmosphere very much. Then we visited Sandia High, and like it much better. Plus, I worked on the east side of town. I would suggest finding the best neighborhood fit for you on the same side of the river where you will be working. Come and visit first and visit the schools in the areas you are interested in.

Good advice - I agree with all of what you said. If they're in both in health care I suspect they will be able to find suitable jobs on either side of the river.
People have such different tastes it's impossible to know what will appeal to someone who's never been here. I've known people who fell in love with the South Valley, others who liked the NE Heights, others the West Mesa, Sandia Foothills, etc., etc. Each area has its pros and cons. Some people only consider where they can get the most house for the money, setting themselves up for a miserable commute, and then complain about traffic as if they weren't contributing to the problem. To each his/her own.

Good Luck.
Hi. Thanks for the input. We will look into it. Yes. A lot of people recommended Rio Rancho. I think we need to come and visit first..
