Are there any country western bars in ABQ or places where you can listen to live country?

Most major country acts do pass through and perform in ABQ. In fact I'm going to Kenny Chesney in April. There are a couple of Western bars in town, and two very good Country Radio Stations. And if you dress in western attire, you'll be fine here as well.

Country music and heavy metal have taken over the Journal Pavilion. It is either one or the other. In the first few years it was open, I saw Steely Dan, Tom Petty, Lennie Kravitz, ZZ Top, Red Hot Chili Peppers and many others. I haven't been there in years because of the acts now playing there.

There is plenty of Country music in this town but it is not a 'Country' town. As finmqa1 said, you will be fine in western attire but the vast majority of people in Albuquerque do not dress that way. You see a handful of people in western shirts and/or wranglers and boots but not many hats. In fact, most people in hats are either out-of-towners from more rural parts or Mexicans.

There was a place near Montgomery & Eubank called Cowboy's. It was a smaller venue with occasional live music, that also had CW dancing certain nights of the week. I always meant to check it out, but never made it, so officially, I can't recommend.

Cowboys is closed now. But Graham Central Station- Montgomery & San Mateo is open and pretty popular. Nice big dance floor to two-step on. They also have other "rooms" that play other music which is kinda nice when you want to walk around a bit.

Theres a place called The Caravan on Central, and it's more of an older crowd but you can dance there too.

Grahams DOES have concerts every once in awhile. And the radio stations 107.9 and 92.3 have small concerts every so often of new artists in a small setting.

This is all in addition to the concerts at the Journal Pavillion/Sandia casino & Isleta casino that all have concerts there.

Hope this helps.

The Dirty Burbon is now open where Cowboys used to be on Eubank and Central they have country western everynight and it is a younger crowd. the best days are Thurs,Fri, Sat. Sandia Casino has western dancing on Wednesday nights, Caravan east on Central between Louisiana and Wyoming but as previously stated that is an older crowd - they have live bands of friday.
