I sure remember those names from childhood - Don the Beachcomber and Trader Vic's.


Reclaiming the Tiki Bar

Ernest Gantt, better known as Donn Beach, opened Don the Beachcomber in Southern California in 1933. He became known for his “Rhum Rhapsodies,” the first tiki drinks. They were elaborate and theatrical, featuring fresh juices and housemade syrups and could have upward of 10 ingredients.

Funny that I just saw this, as a recent edition of Garden and Gun was featuring the Gin Rickey- not exactly a tiki drink, but of the era, I think. In our area, the Tequila Sunrise and Gin Fizz are also seeing a rebirth...
