I don't know about "my state's preferences", but here are mine.
In general: I love IPAs
Sam Smith or St Ambroise-Oatmeal Stout
Racer 5
Good People (just because its a new brewery where I live, really)
Great Divide.

My state just legalized beers over 6% !!!

I consider myself an avid beer drinker but I have no idea what a "craft beer" is. Could someone please enlighten me?

Google is your friend:
Craft Brewer Definition
Although looking at that, it seems too narrow.
So I guess Google isn't God.
Really, its just microbrewed beer. Beer made by smaller, independent breweries (although these days the smaller breweries are still owned by larger parent corporations.

I totally just bought it for the bottle, but it was pretty good! Not the most incredible beer I've ever had, but I would definitely drink it again. It wasn't very heavy, a nice light ale. Something you could sip all day long at a barbecue. I actually found it at my supermarket, which was surprising (at least to me!).

made by a specialty brewer, in smaller batches...I live in Wisconsin and have been to just about every micro-brewery in the State! (a hobby of my husband's is brewery collectibles)....heck, we hunt down breweries where ever we are! (And they are not all owned by the Big Boys!)
Although Leinie's is now...but I still love 'em!
Think "Brew Pubs".

Let's put it this way...it's not generally Budweiser, Coors, or Miller products!
