Not sure whether to term it allergy or intolerance... I've never been a big ham fan but would eat it once in a while, no problems. The last two times though that I had Chunky Soup Bean 'n Ham (which was my FAVORITE and ate it often) - it did NOT agree w/me and I'm not going to go through that again

From what I've found online, food allergies can develop later in life and I'm thinking that's what the issue is. Hoping that regular pork (I do like pork loin chops and regular boneless pork loin, bbq, etc.) won't be an issue. Maybe not searching the right terms but can ham cause intestinal/stomach issues but pork doesn't?

Was this a can soup? Could it be the preservatives in the canned soups.

I looked up the ingredients.

Quote:
Water, Pea Beans, Carrots, Cooked Ham - Water Added (Pork, Water, Salt, Sugar, Sodium Phosphates, Sodium Ascorbate, Sodium Nitrite), Tomato Puree (Water, Tomato Paste), Celery, Contains Less Than 2% Of: Modified Food Starch, Sugar, Salt, Wheat Flour, Yeast Extract, Monosodium Glutamate, Flavoring, Beta Carotene For Color, Pork Stock, Natural Smoke Flavoring, Onion Extract, Garlic Oil.
I wouldn't necessarily blame the ham. The soup has a lot of fiber, 8g per serving. If you're not used to lots of fiber, it can be rough on your digestive system. There's also MSG added, which gives some people diarrhea. You could be sensitive to the nitrites in the ham.

If you got diarrhea right after you ate it and that was your only symptom, your doctor is likely to consider that an intolerance.

Personally I wouldn't be able to eat that soup because of my soy allergy, but I have no problem eating regular pork.

I didn't read the ingredients totally but the MSG would turn me off.

Thanks HedgeHogMom - Unfortunately, I actually threw up and then had diarrhea (all w/i and hour and a half/two hrs.) - I then realized that when I went through problems last month I'd also had that soup. I had such stomach pain I'm not going to risk it again, I don't even like ham that much. I can't imagine fiber had anything to do w/it, I eat beans quite often, black bean soup, regular beans, etc.

I'm thinking it might be nitrates as even the thought of eating regular bacon makes me feel a little queasy.

If it's nitrates, uncured ham might still work for you, if you ever get the urge to have a ham sandwich.

You should get some activated charcoal capsules and zantac or pepcid to keep on hand in case you experience stomach pain like that again. Those help with the allergy kind of stomach pain.

Thanks! I've heard about activated charcoal - I'll have to check into it.

Walmart has some in the aisle with Pepto and Maalox. The brand is Charco Caps.

Ham can be high in histamine and other amines....many people have problems with these substances if they go above a certain level.
