With sleep problems, I always recommend to people that they simply start with a good Calcium/Magnesium supplement taken at night. Both have a calming effect on the body. For some people that is enough.
If you want to go herbal then I would try Valerian Root. That is the most common sleep remedy in the herbal world. The other herbs that are often used are Passionflower and Hops. Sometimes Skullcap is used too. I have taken all of them but if I am having problems unwinding at night before bed I will take Valerian Root.
The amino acid L-Tryptophan is also often used for calming the body.
I know there are some Insomnia homeopathic remedies out there. I have never used those so I can speak to them firsthand.
I would try Melatonin as a last resort as far as supplements go. After that I would use prescription drugs, if needed.
