Someone mentioned this the other day and I just did a search. I've been taking low dose melatonin in my sleep combo for years now. Started with 1/4mg, went to 1/2mg and now 1mg seems to be best. I take a c couple other "calmers" that help with sleep too.
It's my understanding that it can help the elderly whose "natural" production of the substance wanes with age. My further understanding is that it can help people of all ages whose "sleep clocks" have been messed up after traveling into different time zones.
It did not help my insomnia that I suffered in 2014-5.
I have been taking melatonin for about 20 years now. I am up to 6 mg per night (I am 68), but it doesn't always help my sleep issues. I have a lifelong history of problematic sleep and things that help others don't work on me.
Almost every night I have a couple good rounds of dreams. It's my life being asleep. My sister was very alive in my dreams last night as was my mother. Very interesting.
The dreams are all worth getting the restorative sleep. I take a couple other things too like Inositol and Gaba and don't know how I'd do on Melatonin only and don't want to try. I can't imagine how people get any sleep who have insomnia ... when do they sleep?
It helps me sleep, but the resulting nightmares that are a side effect are not worth it for me.
I get nightmares too when i take it. It also makes me feel absolutely awful the next morning. Definitely not refreshed or well-rested. Almost like a hangover.

I don't call mine nightmares, to me they are dreams. I've had a couple "hard" dreams but they are few. Love my dreams. Love my deep sleep too.
I have found magnesium before bed has really helped my sleeping.
Me too. The main difference I've noticed with it from melatonin is that it helps me stay asleep all night. No nightmares with either one.
