Ok, my crazy sleep regime is; 3 Benadryl daily -- & EVERY OTHER day -- a Puritans Pride 10mg horsepill of Melatonin. I figure since its 10mg -- & daily max is 5mg -- I balance by going every other day. Told ya it was nutso
I didn't have nightmares but the dreams were just all. night. long. I don't feel rested when I wake up after dreaming a lot, especially if they are annoying dreams.
I like melatonin...but it doesn't 'keep' me asleep through the night.
I've heard this before from others.
Never had any issue with nightmares...that would be bad.
I wanted to try it for my severe sleep issues but I'm worried about it messing up my natural melatonin levels, you give the brain an artificial source of melatonin,it stops producing the natural source.I think long term it would make sleeping matters worse.
I don't consider it very natural, but it is likely better than taking prescription sleeping pills.

I started taking Melatonin 1/4mg probably in my 60's along with what I have in the thread above. At 79, I'm now at 1.5mg nightly with the other stuff. I sleep good with wake ups for the bathroom. Part of the aging conditon.
I have found magnesium before bed has really helped my sleeping.
I'm having good luck with magnesium as well - in citrate form. I was wondering which kind you take and how much? I have the best results with 400 mgs before bed but the citrate version is very laxative at that dose.

I take Magnesium glycinate at 400mg. It's said to be one of the forms that is most easily absorbed and less likely to cause the laxative effect.
There are many health benefits with a Mediterranean style diet (heart, cancer, etc.) and melatonin is just one of them. Melatonin is in foods such as tomatoes, asparagus, broccoli, olives, oranges, brussel sprouts, cucumbers, raspberries, pomegranate, red grapes, sunflower and flax seeds, walnuts, almonds and barley. That's the shortlist. A varied diet typically provides all the nutrients one needs. Research shows that naturally-produced melatonin works better than synthetic.
Magnesium level is high also in a Mediterranean diet if that is your issue.
Tart/sour cherry juice boosts melatonin levels too but may not be sufficient as a single source. Relying on a single source for anything rarely works. Adding it to a Med diet could help. The juice also has phytonutrients with anti-inflammatory effects on par with ibuprofen so can help with chronic inflammation/pain from conditions like arthritis ... as can other foods in a Med diet.
