I seem to stick with Now Foods C-1000, 100 caps for a pretty low price, depending where one shops...

Why not just buy the AREDS Age-Related Eye Disease supplement that are available from your doctor or in drug stores? It has many of the same ingredients and in dosage that's been tested and recommended for years.

Frankly, anyone who recommends avoiding cataract surgery and monitoring the progress of the cataract shouldn't be giving advice on eye cares. You've cut off one avenue of treatment that may be unavailable later if your approach fails. Cataracts can grow large enough that the surgeon will not recommend an operation to remove them. They won't let you have surgery if you have age-related mental decline that makes it dangerous.

If the cataracts have grown large enough, the glasses you have are probably no longer useful, especially in driving.

What's so wrong about NOT wanting to do surgeries if one can avoid them? The Dr. Google is full of info on prevention and that's the type doctor I go to....

There is a major population of people out there who are into holistic and alternative medicines and I'm so thankful and so are the many docs and practioners who work this way.

And again this is the Alternative forum.

One doctor I hear on the radio every week, says surgeries are dinosaurs and if one can prevent them, that is good, and I totally agree. I live with a messed up surgery now over 10 yrs.

But yes they can be necessary, surgeries that is.

I had a great grandmother and a great aunt who went blind due to cataracts. This would have been before cataract surgery was widely available, or involved long complicated surgery where a,successful outcome was not certain.

If cataracts grow unchecked over the years and become large enough, they will indeed cause blindness. I can see taking recommended supplements ( heck, some of these ARE recommended by eye specialists, who, contrary to some of the claims here, are not advocating cataract surgery for all to line their own pockets) before cataracts develop or when they are small, under the category of it can't hurt and it might help. Many people develop cataracts as they get older, often the cataracts remain small and don't progress to the point where they interfere with vision all that much. My husband and my sisters are in that category. Far as I know they don't take eye supplements, though they could.

But once those cataracts get so big they affect the vision and glasses don't improve things, one is risking blindness in not having cataract surgery. At that point all the supplements and eyedrops in the world will not help.

I have one relative who avoided cataract surgery and another who had both cataract surgery and Lasik surgery. It's obvious who had the better quality of life. One can't drive. The other can. One has to rely on family. The other doesn't. The first eventually no longer had the option to have the cataracts removed because although the cataracts were monitored twice a year ago the surgeon refused when the cataracts became too large.

It's all CHOICE folks, I know 2 people who have had issues with cataract surgeries...and yes they do have a lot of success and that is good, but many prefer to do their own healing. Most out there do not have the interest in getting rid of "cats" on their own. And it can be done, lots of info on that. Cataract surgery is a big business $$$$.

My daughter ended up with a traumatic cataract when she was 10 from a paperclip from a nasty kid in our neighborhood, and the eye doc waited until she was 18 to do the "cat" surgery....So I know cataracts.

My mom and dad had the surgery as that's what their MD's told them to do..and I was not around and didn't know back then what I know now anyway....and they probably would have listened to their doc anyway.

And back then and even today not many people out there wear sunglasses which help a lot with prevention/protection, it's probably major, more people now but a lot has changed hasn't it with info.

That's sad, I wasn't aware that cararacts can become too big to remove, scary thought if someone has let them go and refused needed surgery.

I recall my great aunt, who became blind due to cataracts, had been losing her vision over the years. But she drove anyway for quite some time after she should have stopped. Fortunately she lived in a small town, everyone knew her, knew she couldn't see worth a damn, and they stayed out of her way when they saw her car coming down the road. I recall she drove down the middle of the road, and people would pull off the road when they saw her coming. Different times.
