One would think that with CAFTA there would be more investment in Central America - any a rising standard of living but instead it's just coffee, bananas, sugar cane and maquiladoras - meaning most people are impoverished and turn to gangs or to move to the Estados Unidos to survive. Too bad that these countries never took lessons from Southeast Asian countries (Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand) which have skyrocketing economies and a growing middle class.

People don't want to invest in a place with so much insecurity and instability. As recent as five years ago there was a coup de'tat in Honduras.

yes, i was in Teguc in 2009 for short visit and quite an eye opener. Lots of new shopping malls but damage from Hurricane Mitch in the late 90s still had not been repaired.

I think really the best things that could be done would be if Mexico and US both legalize marijuana, since that would reduce the power of the cartels. Aside from that, it just needs a complete government overhaul
Absolutely agree about the war on drugs. Your body your choice. Instead of people being forced underground and violent guys selling drugs and getting them from violent cartels, let people be free to buy them from drug stores. Instantly these cartels are out of business no matter the drug because it can be produced cheaper and of better quality and with better quality control by big companies in the U.S. We saw what prohibition did to the country when people were forced underground to buy from the likes of Capone. Now people buy alcohol in supermarkets or liquor stores or drug stores and aside from a couple of store robberies there is virtually no violence that go along with selling alcohol. Decriminalizing drugs will stop the cartels, stop some people from crossing the border and get some gangs and thugs off our streets since no one will buy from them.

Hopefully someday Americans in the U.S. will wake up, understand, and take responsibility for the hell our policies let behind. It was the U.S. that trained and sponsored the death squads that reign un-hindered in El Salvador and Honduras.

Instead of allowing Syrian refugees into the U.S., they should prioritize better, allow those seeking to escape Central America come first, as the U.S. is partly to blame for that ongoing mess down there!

You might want to add New Orleans to that list. Hondurans have been in the New Orleans area since the early 20th century.
