Yes, been there twice. On both occasions, the approach was by long distance bus from Curitiba (capital city of Parana state) to Foz do Iguaçu, the largest city in the area. It's a rather scenic 600+ kilometer trip and 8+ hours by bus across the Brazilian state of Parana through forested terrain with lots of river valleys and rolling hills.
First time I was there was in 1981. At that time, the entire southern portion of South America was ruled by military dictatorships, and you could certainly see a heavy military presence upon a visit to the triple frontier area. There was a lot of military on all sides of the borders. It was an easy walk across the bridge from Foz do Iguaçu to what was then called Puerto Presidente Stroessner (today Ciudad del Este) in Paraguay.
Paraguay was at the time one of the more corrupt of all the dictatorships in South America, which is like a worst of the worst rating. Argentina had it's own corrupt dictator who not much later cranked up the war over the Falklands / Malvinas to draw attention away from their own mess at home. Brazil had a more business-like dictatorship but nonetheless I am sure you would not have wanted any trouble from them. The triple frontier area at that time had an almost frontier feel to it. There were a fair number of visitors from Europe & North America, but 80+ percent were from the surrounding 3 nations. It was somewhat of an adventure due to the social and political tension in the days of the dictators.
After my visit in 1981 to the triple frontier area, I took another long haul bus across Paraguay, Argentina and over to Chile, which of course had it's own bad dictator too.
