I just realized I don't think I have ever seen any movies from the English speaking Caribbean? Anyone have some suggestions on best movies from this region of the World?

Who's telling our stories?

Best English Caribbean movie of all time is "The Harder they come", Staring singer Jimmy Cliff. This movie probably has the best original soundtrack I have ever heard.

I love this picture. It reminds me of old photos of my parents from back in the 60s.

Yep, definitely the best, along with "Rockers". There have been quite a few low-budget Jamaican movies over the years, some better than others (I liked "Third World Cop"), but those two are the best. "Rockers" had a plethora of late 70s reggae musicians in it....my favorite scene was Jacob Miller chasing after two guys with a knife after they stole food off his plate.

There are also quite a few movies based on people of Caribbean descent living in the UK. Horace Ove, Trinidadian born, UK based, is well regarded. Some of his movies include "Pressure" and "Playing Away".

I believe there have been some Canada Caribbean movies too. Leonie Forbes was in one of them. If a Jamaican doesn't know who she is (unless they are under 35) they need to hang themselves in shame. She was a contemporary of Louise Bennett.

Default ...

Wow.... such a tiny list for a region full of such character. People keep adding movie names now I really feel like I need to start looking at these movies. I know we have stories to tell.... so these seems sad.

Thanks, I'll look for those. Speaking of Canadian films, did you see "Home Again"? I forgot all about it, but it's about deportees who've lived in the US, UK & Canada their entire lives, commit a crime, then are deported to Kingston where they have no one. Very sad, and I imagine all too common.

"Harder They Come" is the best Jamaican movie...I loved "Rockers" but see it as more of an acquired taste...really interested in hearing about non-Jamaican West Indian movies as I am definitely curious

Jamaica's movies include "Smile Orange", "Dancehall Queen", the very popular "Shottas", "Third World Cop", "Better Mus Come", "Dancehall Queen", "CountryMan" among others

Are Nollywood or Bollywood movies popular in the Caribbean?
