" ... the country’s ... military elites .. remain loyal to ... [the current group of thugs]. And according to Luís Vicente Leon, a leading pollster, the collapse of authoritarian regimes is more often caused by internal splits than outside pressure."

If it were to be resolved by outside pressure, it would require a convincing bribe by powerful foreigners to Venezuelan military elites, and I don't see powerful foreigners particularly keen on propping up Venezuela's oil industry, they are doing a pretty good job of running it into the ground themselves.

Contained chaos and destruction are good for business - oil, arms and lawyers.

As long as the chaos and destruction are contained within Venezuela's borders, the situation could fester for years to come and nobody outside would care much. Just for example, most moneyed Venezuelans who want to come to Miami have already done so.

Good Luck!

Millions of South Americans have at least one European grandparent, so lots of people from Venezuela are in Spain or Italy.

It doesn’t appear that the opposition in Venezuela is strong enough to turn Madura out of office. Should they make their peace with him to keep things from getting worse? Should the United States throw a lifeline to Venezuela even if it makes Madura stronger?

The destruction of Venezuela should serve as a deterrent to the dreamers of Socialism who believe that government is the best solution to every single problem known to mankind, from poverty to homelessness, through cancer and obesity, including tornadoes and floods.

Socialism failed in the Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, China, Cuba, and now in the latest casualty, Venezuela, the richest country in South America before the Chavistas took control.
We'll see. I don't have much hope. Don't underestimate the power of ignorance.

A lot of people really believe that the rich got that way because they stole from the poor and that the only solution is to redistribute a country's wealth. In many countries there is very little appreciation for free market principles. They don't realize that entrepreneurship creates wealth and jobs. The masses in South Africa, for instance, would likely chomp at the bit if given the opportunity to take from the rich if their elite didn't show greater restraint. In Latin America, it seems that people are particularly susceptible to socialist idealism. Go Che!

I am really surprised that Bolivia under Evo has been doing very very well, it's growing at nearly 5% annual growth for the last seven years with hardly any inflation (outperforming all the other nations in the region).

Its currency is so strong that thousands of Argentinians are dumping their pesos for Bolivianos. As of this year alone Argentinians have been experiencing over 40% inflation rate with double digit unemployment. According to the news over three hundred thousands Argentinians have fled to Bolivia.
