Latinos who come from non predominantly Black countries have often asked me if I’m Dominican. That has happened to other African Americans, especially if they speak Spanish.
The DR is definitely the Blackest country in Latin America.
And as only 12 percent of Americans are Black, it’s definitely way Blacker than the US, which is a predominantly white country.
I have been asked by DOMINICANS if I am Dominican. I have been asked by Haitian if I am Haitians.
Dominicans need to process the fact that the line which divides the island of Hispaniola is no more clear than that which separates Mexico from the USA. Its a very porous one, both culturally and in terms of the cultures and ethnicities of its peoples.
I suspect that most NON US people will eyeball the DR and assume it to be around 60% black, with most of the rest mixed.
It will slow it down, but everybody knows it can’t be stopped. Simply learn to live with it and hope the neighbor has better times ahead. It’s much more preferable for people on both ends to have rivalries of which place has bigger malls, the most modern metro, longest highways, etc than how it is right now. Plus, more people from both sides would visit the other on tourist trips, shopping excursions, etc without having the CNN of the world making anyone afraid of the other side.

Nah, DR has to contain it somehow because DR cannot afford to absorb a large group of illegal migrants. But yea Haiti needs to stablize. Yes, Haiti by western hemisphere standards is VERY poor(alothough no longer the poorest now Venezuela), but compared to the rest of the world using GDP per capita/GNI it actually beats out some African countries like Rwanda and Tanzania. I know that may seem like who is the tallest midget, but by African standards Rwanda and Tanzania are VERY impressive by African standards, and I been to Tanzania, and its developing fast. My point is.... Haiti's biggest issue is political instability, if it just fixes that it can move forward like how Rwanda and Tanzania are doing.
Haiti needs its military back. It was the dumbest thing to get rid of the military. They need a highly trained military that will deal with the political instability and gangs. Haiti needs stability and order and then from there(hopefully with the corrupt ass govt) they can kinda move forward. But the more unstable Haiti becomes the more migrants which isn't good for Haiti nor the region.
It may not be what some want to hear maybe due to political/ideological reasons, but in this times an efficient border wall can be created anywhere if their is a will to do that. Of course, if there isn't a will, then a wall will be made that would be relatively easy to cross or better yet is not building a wall at all.
In any case, a well built wall is meant to make it more difficult for illegals to cross, it does nothing for the legal ones that went through the bother of going to an embassy or consulate and applying for a resident visa. At least getting one to go to the DR isn't that hard compared to getting one to go to the USA, not to mention the costs in time and money. Having certain diseases such as HIV/AIDS makes it impossible to get any visa to the DR since anyone with HIV/AIDS are barred from entering the DR as a mechanism of keeping rates low among Dominicans and reduce the chance of becoming dependant on the free Dominican government funded public health system. Of course, that doesn't apply if crossing illegally for obvious reasons. I'm not sure if having diseases such as that bars someone from getting a visa to the USA.
