I don't even think it could do that without shattering the US government. Plus Canada has some pretty big differences from the US.

The US cannot even control gangs in its own cities, how can it deal with cartels and militias?

Your insaciable need to snort cocaine and shoot heroin in your vains will only force the trade to take another route.

We’re good... The U.S. can’t take care of everybody or even attempt to bring them up to the U.S. standards of living... Not possible.

I’ll chip in as a Canadian, though my views are quite different from those of most of my countrymen.

Let's say it's a goal for 2100. Personally I am ok if it is through a European Union type of deal or a country by country joining to the United States manifest destiny type deal. For the sake of the other countries, probably a EU type deal is going to sit better with other countries because it allows everyone to have a say in its fundamental charter. As long as it isn't through bloodshed so as to lead to civil strife. I don't want to have some long simmering internal conflict based upon people being forced into the union like we have now with both Natives & us black people. Let me explain why I think it would be better for everyone in the entire western hemisphere to unite eventually.
I actually agree with you in some ways. In the past I’ve long suggested merging the five eyes into a single country, but this is something else entirely.

Quote:
1. Better neighbors is essentially a better life - We should value our neighborhood because its our neighborhood. What is the value of Iowa? Idaho? etc. We like having a large country because it gives the average person options. It gives us the ability to live work play and form relationships with people. Sure our areas may have a different flavor like the Pacific Northwest vs. SoCal vs. South vs. New England, but you can choose where you would like to live. I know there are larger differences between the entire hemisphere but it is in the same vein.
That is the biggest benefit. Having access to huge areas is fantastic.

Quote:
2. Global politics - Much of the consternation surrounding global politics today is the fear that economic advancement in other countries will lead to national rivalries based upon fear of political subordination. If we were to include the Latinos with us, they would advance with us. We could cheer for our neighbors as they would be a part of us.
That wouldn’t really solve the problem. In the US today, not all States safe at the same level of development and that would obviously still apply here.

Quote:
3. Completes the Monroe doctrine - This is a huge one. It is likely that we will always subordinate Canada & LATAM due to fear of an outside power threatening the peace & prosperity of our continent. If they join the Union, there is no need to boss other countries around in the neighborhood because everyone is counted for. There also would be no free-riders on defense. It would create the most secure region on the planet by geography.

4. If we push for an EU type of arrangement, then America cannot overrule everyone else by population alone. This may assuage the other countries fears. Countries might fear joining one by one because they know that we would overwhelm them. If it included the entire hemisphere it creates a dynamic of a Union where everyone has a voice. Once again I'm ok with the manifest destiny, one country at a time approach. However if an EU type of deal is needed then this might placate some fears.
Here you are contradicting yourself. The original premise of your thread calls for an annexation whereas here you claim to be willing to settle for an EU type of arrangement. These are hardly comparable. An annexation is a hostile takeover.

Quote:
5. Functionally ends illegal immigration - Crossing the Atlantic or Pacific would make illegal immigration so difficult that we wouldn't need to worry about it.

Here are some other advantages that would help in fostering this union.

• Language - The entire hemisphere has ~1 billion people. Of those ~350 million English speakers, ~400 million Spanish speakers & ~200 million Portuguese speakers. The last remaining ~50 million are split up with French taking ~23 million. Unlike the EU which has to boil down to English in order for people to understand each other, we could actually learn to speak the three dominant languages.
Learning more languages is always a plus, but English would easily dominate as its an Alpha language. Spanish and Portuguese are Betas.

Quote:
• Culture - There are some dominant cultural themes in the hemisphere. We have a similar "New World" identity. White settlement, black slavery to emancipation, Native subjugation to liberation, Asian economic migration. We all are moving towards a mix-up of these overarching groups. There is a dominant Protestant/Catholic heritage within all of the hemisphere. We don't have the large religious differences that you see in the other hemisphere. Also most everyone in the hemisphere nominally agrees on democracy. Obviously some are having problems (Venezuela)
To a certain extent that’s true, but Catholics and Protestants have long been at odds with one another.

Quote:
• Natural landscape - We have many and beautiful national parks & biodiversity in this region. Because of our low population density compared to the other hemisphere we have been able to keep much of our natural heritage. The hemisphere is large and beautiful. It would be great to have full access to it all.
Fully agree with this. Niagara Falls and Patagonia in the same country. Where do I sign up

Quote:
• Economic - The people on this continent are not old and can still contribute to the betterment of their days. We also would be a powerhouse that could expand our reach farther into all manners of life and this world. We would increase both our economic standing and potential.

I know there are major challenges

• Crime
• Ideology - Socialism
• Corruption
• Economics - Major difference in wealth between anglophone & Latino areas.
• Immigration - We want a balanced hemisphere, not everyone moving to the US
• Identity - We have no shared experience

I am not proposing that we eliminate this quickly or without thought. However I think the benefits far outweigh the costs and would be something worth striving for. Due to more similarities, a big payoff & a geography that is always going to demand our interest, we should go for it.
All of these are actually the biggest hurdles you would need to overcome. From a Canadian point of view, there’s the issue that we are practically the only country on the continent that doesn’t have to deal with a massive crime rate. The US is an outlier among the developed world with its level of violence (mind you, not that Canada doesn’t have any) and Latin America has some of the highest homicide rates in the world.

Corruption is a huge problem in all of the countries. Canada has the least by a wide margin.

Immigration is driven by opportunities and wealth. You would need to create a strong incentive across the whole area and not have it solely be focused on what is now the US and Canada.

Quote:
And last we can finally settle the debate about are Americans the people of the continent or people of the United States
Well if you do end up annexing the rest of the continent it would probably become the United States.

Quote:
Your thoughts...
Great idea in theory, but not practical on almost any level or likely even desirable by many (I’m probably the exception).
I will say this though, that out of all the continents, America is the most uniform one, broadly speaking.

Sounds boring. I think a better idea from the standpoint of the respective countries would be to unite and then annex the United States.

America should annex every country in the Western Hemisphere

Sure, and then after that the United States of the Americas can set out to systematically annex every other country and continent in the rest of the world, right? Then the name of the planet can be changed to the United States of Borg World.

Your fantasy idea for USA to annex and control all of the western hemisphere is the most hostile, greedy, power hungry idea I've ever heard of since Hitler got the idea to try to conquer and take over the eastern hemisphere.

For crying out loud, stop trying to be such a control freak, get a grip on reality and learn something from history.
