Today, August 10, the National Statistics Office (Oficina Nacional de Estadísticas) or ONE published preliminary results of the latest census taken late last year. Yes, not in July (as expected, lol). All the information will be released by the end of 2024, but from now until then there will be releases of some of the information.

This census includes certain things that were not included in recent censuses such as self-identity racial classification (hasn't been included in censuses since the 1970's), people with disabilities, etc.

Preliminary Partial Results

Total Population
10,760,028

Total Homes
4,418,619 (16.3% are unoccupied)

Sex
Men 49.5%, Women 50.5%

Population Growth
1.10%

The population growth has been decreasing since the last decade of the Trujillo dictatorship which was 3.62%. Things such as the insertion of women into the labor force, increasing educational levels, adopting modern lifestyles such as having smaller families, increasing urbanization explain this decline.

Traditional Regions
Capital 3,798,699 (35.3%)
Cibao 3,567,698 (33.1%)
South 1,917,710 (17.8%)
East 1,475,921 (13.7%)

The majority of the population lives in the Capital and Cibao regions. The area that receives most of the tourists is the East and that continues to be the least populated region, but its population is greater than all the Caribbean countries/territories except Haiti, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Jamaica and maybe Trinidad.

10 Most Populous Provinces
Blue = Capital, Black = Cibao, Orange = South, Brown = East

Santo Domingo (not to confuse with the nation's capital, though it's within the Capital region) 2,769,589
Santiago 1,074,684
Distrito Nacional (capital city of Santo Domingo) 1,029,110
San Cristóbal 688,828
La Altagracia (most visited province by tourists, this is where Punta Cana is located) 446,060
La Vega 442,720
Puerto Plata (most visited Dominican port of call for cruiseships is the capital of this province named the same) 338,354
San Pedro de Macorís (this province has supplied the most Dominican baseball players to the MLB in the USA) 337,145
Duarte 308,353
La Romana 287,915

Provinces Most Popular With Expats
Puerto Plata (Sosúa/Cabarete) 338,354 (3.1% of the country's population)
La Altagracia (Punta Cana/Bávaro) 446,060 (4.1%)
Samaná (Las Terrenas) 111,990 (1%)

When the other information is released they will be posted here.

The second round of data (now definite instead of preliminary) was made public on November 30, 2023. The results are very similar to the preliminaries.

Yellow = Cibao (basically everything north from about Villa Altagarcia in the Duarte Highway (RD-1).)
Gray = Capital
Blue = South (all provinces south of the Central Mountains including San José de Ocoa and as soon you cross westward the Haina River from Santo Domingo.)
Red = East (basically everything east of Boca Chica (RD-3) including the Punta Cana/Bávaro area.)

Samaná/Las Terrenas is in Cibao Nordeste.
Puerto Plata/Sosúa/Cabarete/Santiago is in Cibao Norte.
Jarabacoa is in Cibao Sur.
Bayahibe/Punta Cana/Cap Cana/Bávaro is in Yuma.
Juan Dolio is in Higüamo.
Boca Chica/Santo Domingo is in Ozama.

To get an idea of size, the entire east of the DR is about the size of Puerto Rico/Jamaica/Connecticut (not together.)

Capital = 3.8 million
Cibao = 3.6 million
South = 1.9 million
East = 1.5 million
