We're trying to get to the lower 48 namely Tennessee and we're venturing out of Anchorage on the 28th. Seems like doing the ferry will be the safest way? The ferry leaves out of Haines but the traveling (775miles) to Haines has us concerned due to the winter. Anybody out there with suggestions, advice, alternate routes etc please feel free to respond. Much appreciated!!

The ferry can be unpredictable in winter but if you're not good with snow driving it might be a good bet. HOWEVER you will still have 18-24 hours to drive from Haines to Anchorage, depending on the roads. That drive is remote and subject to bad weather conditions. Take it slow, buy a Milepost, and DON'T RUSH and you'll be OK.

Alaska 511 - Transportation & Public Facilities, State of Alaska.

Current Road Conditions - Highways and Public Works - Government of Yukon

Only one way to get to the ferry is to drive to Haines.

You can always drive all the way.

Drive BC

The road to Haines in the winter isn't that bad. Alaska and Canada both do a good job at keeping it plowed. Just slow down and take your time. That's when most people encounter problems. Just because the speed limit sign say 55 MPH that doesn't mean it's smart to drive that fast....

Stiff I would hasten to disagree//I just came through those passes and it was anything but secure, blowing snow drifts covering the roadway. You must be prepared or suffer the consequences. driving in Alaska is always unpredictable and equally unforgiving.

I'd drive all the way down. Cheaper than the ferry.
