My husband has a degree in Geography with cartography and GIS. We are trying to find out what the emplyment potential is for him there. I already have a job at Providence Hospital but we are making this move without any idea if he will be able to find a job. That scares me a lot! He makes $18 dollars an hour here and I was wondering if he could expect anything close to that there. He has worked as a bank teller, a Laboratory assistant, a research analyst, and in hospital and factory security. I know that the wages on Craigs list seemed pretty low, especially for security, but I am hoping that once he is actually there, he will be able to find more opportunities. Any advice would be appreciated!

Someone recently mentioned the local banks are always needing help. Might be a place to start while looking for something better. Have you looked here?

Default don't they have a program?

Don't they have a GIS program at UofA? (or it might be in Fairbanks). I know I've read something about it in one of the course catalogs. If anyone knows the job market there, it would be the recent grads in that field. Might want to check out the universities to see which one offers that degree and try getting a hold of an instructor or two.

Good idea Rotorhead, They may also try the State and Municipality of Anchorage. I know both are using GIS for property databases etc.

If your husbands qual's are true, he would not have any problem landing a decent job.....eventually.
The problem is getting his foot in the door. Start hitting the temp agencies, once in he can strut his stuff and do his thing.
Once there and he proove's himself, they will fight heaven and hell to keep him. Lot's of people show up and talk a lot of crap, and can do nothing.
Skilled peole are a rarity, and the temp agency is a legal way to work around the "native hiring preference" nonsense.

That is funny, I am a senior with a major in Geography and Planning and a certification in GIS. I am also thinking about trying to find employment in the Anchorage area or at least out west. From what I gather, through talking to professors at my University (Appalachian State) and through reading job postings across the US, there is a lot of opportunity for anyone with GIS expertise. I doubt you will have trouble finding a job for your husband anywhere you decide to move.

Default GIS Position available

I work for DOWL Engineers (w w w . d o w l . c o m). We have an opening for a GIS specialist. You are able to apply online at the website. To find all jobs listed on our website, go to the homepage>Careers at DOWL>Open Positions. On the following page click on Anchorage, AK. The opening is about the tenth one from the top.

I hope that you find this helpful. I agree with those who say that opportunities abound for individuals with similar qualifications to your husband. Do not be concerned about "Alaska Native" hiring preference. Between Anchorage and Fairbanks, I've lived all my life in Alaska and I've never heard of anyone being refused a job based on hiring preferences.
